Progress during 2002
This page will have pictures of "Ground Zero" as the clean up progresses during 2002
First a picture from late Sept taken from another building (Banker Trust building I think and not taken by me either). You can see the extent of the damage.
Here is a picture of the same area (except from my office). The first photo was taken from a building to the right of the WTC from this vantage. They have removed all of the steel that was on top and worked there way into the basement levels. They have also demolished the surrounding WTC building (the short black buildings above).
Now the same area as it looks on March 5, 2002. You can also notice that they have built scaffolding around the Winter Garden and have already removed some of the glass toward the back. They are planning to reopen the West Side Highway on April 1, 2002. This is the last major roadway to be reopened.
The have set up two sets of lights in tribute to the towers and all those the died on Sept 11. Here is how one of the platforms appears out of my office window. It does not really look so impressive from my office. There is a lot of light noise.
And here is how the other platform looks from the ground. I walk past these everyday on my way to the office. You can start to see the size of the platform.
And here looking directly up into the sky.
The glass panels are being removed from the Winter Garden and will be replaced. (April 16, 2002)
Two days later they have a row of three panels removed. (April 18, 2002)
All of the glass on the top of the Winter Garden has been replaced. The side facing the camera was not damaged. (July 3, 2002)
The view of Ground Zero from the 15 floor of WFC4. (July 3, 2002)
An observation area was opened on the south side of Ground Zero sometime in June. Here you can see construction of the 1/9 subway line in progress. (July 3, 2002)
Here you can see that Ground Zero is now effectivly a construction site. (July 3, 2002)
Here is the view of the WFC on a very clear morning a week later. (July 11, 2002)
